Music Reviews Artist: NnekaTitle: AfricansLabel: Four MusicWebsite: http://www.nnekaworld.com/
Taken from the critically acclaimed 'Victim of Truth' album 'Africans' opens with a sensuous guitar melody and some Bjork like oh, oh, oh ohs. Fear not comparisons with the Icelandic icon end there. The true power of Nneka's voice soon kicks in and the reggae beat takes hold.
It is no surprise to learn that Nneka, who was born in Nigeria and now resides in Germany, grew up singing in school yards and dusty church halls. Her powerful, husky voice has brought inevitable comparison to Lauren Hill and Neneh Cherry but she retains a distinct and impossible to ignore style. Her voice is equally at home with the sounds of gospel, R&B, soul, reggae or hip hop.
Although it is Nneka's vocal dexterity that makes the track, DJ Farhot's production skills deserve their share of praise. 'Africans' is an anthemic tale of personal frustration with the continent's failure to change and the repetition of the same old problems. As well as sweet voice Nneka has a serious message to share.
Although the single may be enough to tide some fans over it is surely time for a new album.
