Music Reviews Artist: Miranda BarberTitle: Lips' DecisionLabel: Barbershop RecordsWebsite: http://www.mirandabarber.com
Made with the proceeds of a Slicethepipe.com songwriters competition, and produced by Charlie Wilson, 'Lip's Decision' is Miranda Barber's debut release. Its a gentle mix of piano-led jazz and breathy blues with the occasional hint of ska, and a nod towards the West End musical.
Comparisons have been made with the likes of Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday but Melbourne born, and now Hackney based, Barber isn't quite their yet. Her sometimes haunting, but rarely warm, voice can't be challenged for its lack of versatile however, flitting between sultry, sexy and soaring. She is at her best when backed with the driving force of piano riffs or bouncy baselines to drive the music forward ('The Num Num Song', and 'Elza' being good examples), but struggles to carry the more minimal numbers with her voice alone.
The capital's theatre scene has clearly had an impact since her move from Oz,visible through her dramatic ballads and dedication to story-telling; another demonstration of her talents but also begs the question why she went for a studio album? Perhaps the next glimpse we will get will be a live album, and a better reflection of what Barber has to offer.
