At this time of year it's customary to hear a lots of slushy love songs in a desperate bid to clinch the Christmas number 1. Thankfully and unsurprisingly the second single to be released from 's number 1 album 'Piece by Piece' is not one of them.
She may not get the pop star status or the amount FHM covers that Girls Aloud do - who are releasing a Christmas single - but her talent as a songwriter and singer is continuing to grow.
'I Cried For You' doesn't quite grab you from the outset with just a guitar and Melua's voice but as it goes on her vocals becomes haunting and she seems to be feeling every word she's singing. It's definitely a song that will grow on you and the simplicity of this sparsely backed track is what will have you humming along after a few listens. As if that wasn't good enough Melua has given The Cure's 1987 hit 'Just Like Heaven' the once over.
It's always brave to take on a classic from a cult band but Melua gets away with it with yet another emotional delivery and not to mention that it's had the seal of approval from Robert Smith. The Brit School graduate has had chart success without being tabloid totty and if she keeps releasing tracks like this she's sure to overtake Norah Jones and James Blunt in the 'chill out' charts.
