In a music industry dominated with formulaic, over produced and over hyped sounds comes this breath of fresh air. Gum drop draws influences from modern soul, electro funk and heavy bass hip hop. Lace this with sometimes smooth sometimes raw vocals and you can envisage the common sound running throughout this album.
One thing that this album capitalises on is variation. One moment you’re chilling out to the down tempo ‘keeps on burning’ and before you know it your shuffling your feet to the grooved up instrumental that is ‘block drop’, both equally addictive tracks.
However, if the range of musical sounds does not tempt you on the proceeding 13 tracks then the aptly titled ‘one last chance’ comes like a sweet summer’s day…with strings! The funk slash jazz infusion rounds the album off a treat and almost forces you to return to the beginning to take this musical journey all over again.
Rating: 4/5 – praise the revival!
