DJ’s The Unabomber’s have been playing with their Technics for the more discerning of Mancunians since 1995 now at their Electric Chair nights. A night born out of early big beat, you can rely on the unexpected with the Unas, as witnessed on their last excellent Electric Chair compilation ‘Saturday Night, Sunday Morning’.
‘Summer Sunset’ slows down the tempo slightly compared to ‘Saturday Night Sunday Morning,’ but the Una’s certainly don’t skimp going through their record bag in an attempt to bring you the freshest beats old and new.
Platinum Pied Pipers’ ‘Deep Inside’ is late seventies sounding Parliament revolving around an aggressively lazy fat acid bassline. ‘Far Beyond’ by Sunburst Band (also known as Joey Negro) is nicely soothing with its rich Piano and strings and ‘Where I Belong’ from Zero 7’ collaborator Sia is a Viagra hit of pure sexy funk.
Flevans ‘The Notion’ picks up the pace and tips us the nod to a more uptempo mood in the second half of the compilation bringing remixes from 4 Hero and tracks from Bugz in The Attic and Jazztronik amongst equally good newcomers.
The Bombers don’t disappoint with their choice of tunes - Summer Sunset is well thought out, well mixed, effortlessly funky and doesn’t take itself too seriously (check out the accapella of ‘Booty La La’ by Bugz In The Attic). Maybe not as lairy as ‘Saturday Night Sunday Morning’ but Summer Sunset manages to suit both the early evening warm up session before you move into 11’o’clock and beyond whilst still not sounding out of place the next morning over a fry up and a Stella top.
