An album as boring as it is pointless. “Legendary” lounge-jazz man Dr John’s lazy take on a bunch of songs written a long time ago by famed lyricist Johnny mercer is a fairly tiresome listen, to be honest. Nothing particularly wrong with the songs or the delivery or the performance in themselves but the lasting impression is one of complete non-interest. Jazz by numbers kind of defeats the point of jazz. It’s the kind of easy listening that was so easy to make that there really wasn’t any point at all.
Any drive, energy or meaning that Mercer may have originally implanted into his songs is completely lost in DR John’s translation and I would not recommend it to anyone.
