Reviews Soul and Jazz

She’s one ballsy chick is Amy Winehouse and boy aren’t we glad to have her back.  Black  To Back is her sophomore album, following the Mercury nominated debut Frank, and Rehab is its first single.

“They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no’ croons our Amy in the defiant manner. Jazzy and funky and understated cool.

The songs seem to go nowhere. They're just boring. Flat. Her vocal style is way too laid back. Irritating.
She could be good.

Rogo, the fact that you don't get the lyrics demonstrates a lack of knowledge of Winehouse's musical influences, which explains why you don't like the tune. "Ray" is Ray Charles. And "Yester Halfaway" is "Mister" Donnie "Hathaway". The song requires an understanding of and respect for its musical godfathers in order to be appreciated. If you don't listen to old blues and soul, of course it will be annoying! If you do, it's an extraordinarily refreshing change for mainstream modern music.

the lyrics makes sense if you know anything about music
Ray, is Ray Charles
and I'm pretty sure she says "Mr. Hathaway" as in Donny Hathaway, one of the greatest R&B singers of all time.
also, she was one of the mots talked about performances at Coachella, she was even better in person than she is on the album, which is rare nowadays.

Who cares? Who's Ray? Lyrics make no sense anyway. I tried to google "yester halfaway", 4 hits. All from this song. Melody boring, harmony are boring, no matter cool production and bouncy horns. Memorability is tops, I'm sorry to say. This is the definition of annoying.
