Music Reviews Artist: The NationalTitle: 'Mistaken For Strangers'Label: Beggars BanquetWebsite: http://www.americanmary.com
If you hadn’t heard of The National before or been party to exerts of their meticulously well crafted music its likely you would be unsure of what to really expect. The bands single ‘Mistaken For Strangers’, released in the UK on April 30th, is a track which has been met with mixed opinions and for good reason.
Whilst the band are known for producing brain storming, on the edge numbers this track in hard to get in to and slow to appeal to the old ear ducts. Taken from their eagerly awaited LP entitled ’Boxer’, it lacks punch and fails to grab you by the short and curlies despite showing signs of a well engineered musical arrangement.
The track starts with a hollow clanging that penetrates to the core, an off the cuff, military style drum patter erupts from nowhere and signals the arrival of vocals courtesy of Matt Berninger. Berninger has one of those vocal styles that although not full of emotion here, in fact far from it, lends itself to the pace and course of the tracks direction. Lyrically ‘Mistaken For Strangers’ is sound, lyrics like: ‘you get mistaken for strangers by your own friends... you wouldn't want an angel watching over you - surprise, surprise, they wouldn't want to watch’, quite dark and heavy but atmospheric and emotive at the same time.
New comers to the band will be slow to latch on to the power and appeal that the band has but in time, and with tracks ‘Black Slate’ and ‘Santa Clara’ in accompaniment, this release is the full package for anyone.
