The Maple State are a Mancurian band with a seeming fixation on sounds originating on the opposite side of the Atlantic, as opposed to say Salford. Detectable not only in their purposely idiosyncratic, scatty, busy rhythms but additionally in the Trans-Atlantic vocals. In the press release mention is made of the influence of US indie forefathers a la Sonic Youth, or Modest Mouse and sure such influences are noticeable in the music and arrangements, but additionally the writer hears elements of Hot Hot Heat in the vocals. If the aim of the single is to achieve three minutes of jumpy, US- college rock then no doubt it is successful. Moreover while there’s no re-inventing the wheel here, ’We Swear By The Light Of Light’ seems a fair representation of the bands aspirations. Overall a decent single with some nice interwoven guitar melodies, while not hugely original it appears to have enough hooks to appeal to fans of the aforementioned bands.
