‘Stuck Between Stations’ is the latest single from The Hold Steady’s ’Boys and Girls In America’ album. And American in the best possible sense of the word, perhaps best represents the band’s overall sound. For it’s there in the Springsteen-esque organ breakdown, the Paul Westerberg-like storytelling bent and the fundamentally wide-screen sound. Moreover much in the way that British bands often present a self conscious, irony-tinged, image. In contrast ’The Hold Steady’ appear intent to adopt a let it all hang-out stance, that is buck the current fashion trends, and revel in the anthemic nature of their songs. ’Stuck Between Stations’ is thus that type of song you purposely play loud when driving in your car, that type of song that you are glad some programmer at a radio station has deemed fit to play. Simply it is direct, loud, classic rock and roll, as guitarist Tad Kubler puts it, “We’re not reinventing rock music here. We’re just trying to carry on a tradition that has always been in our lives”
