If you are setting out to see the Eagles on any other day of the week, the chances are you would be taking a trip to a massive arena or even a Stadium. In fact one of their more recent appearances in the UK was at the old Wembley Stadium when they toured When Hell Freezes over. That went down in history as one of the most boring gigs ever - compared to sitting in the bleachers, watching some ants over the other side of a pitch and listening to an Album being played. They were victims of their precision and professionalism and the familiarity of their songs. Maybe then it was their need to recreate the past note for note to confirm that they were as good as ever, despite it being a reunion after a long break. But their appearance at IndigO2, a 2200 seat venue with around 1300 present inside The O2 in Greenwich, was a very different night out.
Starting off with 4 tracks from their new number one album, Long Road out of Eden, they were as tight and harmonious as ever but this time, much more relaxed and just …..alive. While the tracks from the newbie sounded interesting it was the opening riffs to Hotel California that really set the place alight. Although ‘alight’ when the audience is primarily suited industry execs is not as fiery as it might have otherwise been. However, they then graciously ran through loads of their hits for over two hours and ventured into their solo project numbers like Henley’s Boys of Summer and Walsh’s Life’s been good to me, for which his introduction was humorous and humble.
As they made their way through the set list one couldn’t help but be in awe of their abilities. They have never been the most animated of performers but their voices remain spot on, their musicianship tight and precise and the songs more familiar and numerous than most credible music execs would care to admit. In one black suit/white shirt (open at the neck) was saying that he had only come because his girlfriend was a fan. But he was singing along word perfectly to every lyric. The Eagles are quietly legendry. They’re cheesecloth shirts, long hair, flared Levis and sunny days – but that’s if you are old enough to be nostalgic about that stuff. If you are not, then listen to these guys, see them if you can, and understand just how high the benchmark for musicianship can be set by a band.
