Sunny Day Sets Fire, that’s SDSF to those in the know, may hail from five different countries (Italy, Hong Kong, Sardinia, England and Canada) but it is in East London they now reside. Their latest offering ‘End of the Road’ is bouncy, indie-folk reminder that summer is just around the corner, and a much welcomed one.
Established fans will be kept happy with the psychedelic-pop tinge and guitar solos that could have been stripped straight from an old Westerns, while its driving, catchy rhythm and warm vocals will draw in the masses. Mainstream success and critical acclaim rarely go hand in hand but both would be deserved here.
The b-side ‘Lack of View’ is a more sombre affair - less obviously pleasing but worth the extra effort it demands. The summer warmth is replaced by deep melancholia and in place of the bounce are jarring rhythms and gentle melodies. Much less accessible but another the good example of the groups musical imaginativeness.
These are one to watch for 2008 and have already been working with the likes of Spank Rock, Diplo, CSS and Cool Kids.
