With 'Postcode', it is unclear whether Orphan Boy were trying to make a hit single or present a complete (if chronologically askew) history of punk music. From the sparse opening drum beat (a slower take on the intro to The Exploited's 'Sex & Violence') to the lead singer's half-hearted Joe Strummer-esque inflections, via the 'Hey Hey Hey' of The Ramones and the use of punk's toughest and most reliable safety net for when imagination is thin on the ground – 'Oi!' - it seems as if Orphan Boy were so busy cramming in every influence from their favourite genre, they forgot the importance of tune, melody and – essentially – quality. 'Postcode' never really gets anywhere, mainly because it's so deeply grounded in the past and ultimately, this song offers a pretty poor imitation of a type of music that was done infinitely better roughly 30 years ago.
