There’s one thing that Maximo Park can always be sure to supply and that’s a dramatic and rich content to the lyrics running throughout their tracks. ‘Books For Boxes’ is a prime example, lead singer Paul Smith bleats out a highly descriptive lyrical story in his own individual, highly accented style here. With a vocal that is quite unique and simple in form, Smith‘s northern twang is comforting and settles the listener into proceedings.
The band are known for their clever mix of indie-rock on a par with other local bands hailing from the north east like The Futureheads, however this track shows an air of punk rock with jaunty, sharp edged guitar melodies and an up tempo drum beat. The implementation of Duncan Lloyd’s haunting over lying guitar lead adds a mystical quality to the tracks chorus, coupled with harmonious vocals, all the pieces fit into place to signal the creation of yet another Maximo Park masterpiece.
