Music Reviews Artist: KingsizeTitle: 'Girl'Label: Weekender RecordsWebsite: http://www.myspace.com/thisiskingsize
There has been much hype surrounding indie/ punk-rock band Kingsize, hailed as ‘Breakthrough Band of 2007‘ by XFM, the group have much to live up to on the back of such a prestigious title.
‘Girl’, the bands debut single is a classic reincarnated homage to the late 70’s, early 80’s punk-rock scene, pumping the air with jaunty beats, a catchy bass line and a shower of care free harmonic melodies. It is clear from Mike McCartney’s rough and ragged appearance and cockney infused vocals that the punk-rock period was of huge influence to him and fellow band members too. Sounding a cross between Blur’s Damon Alburn, The Go’s Robert “Bobby” Harlow and a guitar clad David Brent/ Ricky Gervais, McCartney gives a care free simplistic spin on life. A vibrant, beery knees up concludes to step aside for b-side ’Boy’, which as it might suggest is the alter ego in every way to ’Girl’ showing great musicianship from the band and diverse foresight.
