Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong @ The Charlotte, Leicester
As the Charlotte starts to fill up there’s a sense of stirring anticipation for this band. Placed at number 7 in the prestigious BBC sounds of 2008 poll, becoming NME favourites in the space of a year and touring with diverse artists from Dizzee Rascal to Babyshambles would be enough to say that the expectation was justified.
Did I mention that the lead singer was in the television show ‘The Tudors’ and ‘Peep Show’ (just to add to the novelty) Anyway unexciting TV shows and dull middle class men in suits deciding what’s relevant in the music industry aside, the London Indie rockers have only released one song ‘Lucio Starts Fires’ which was third on the setlist. The Leicester faithful hardly went crazy for it but it was the only half decent song during the whole set.
They had all the confidence in the world but for the whole forty five minutes I felt as though I was listening to one song, one forty five minute tedious ‘same old indie’ song that doesn’t look like shaking foundations or breaking barriers like other great acts for 2008 are promising. After the fourth song the Leicester crowd started to look uninspired and you got the sense that most of them would go back to their bedrooms wondering why this band got a record deal and their band is relegated to slumming it around in their basement and playing open mic night, after open mic night, after open mic night.
