First on tonight were Bristolians Fortune Drive, a five piece who definitely know a thing or two about making some noise. Some pretty loud noise with screeching guitars a plenty but still melodic and rhythmic.
We thought we’d seen it all, but that was until The Grates came on. An Aussie trio with only a guitarist and drummer as musicians, in addition to vocalist Patience, they managed to stir up the crowd with their high octane punk tunes. Patience is suitably entertaining, choosing to wear a bizarre white tutu costume and branding any virgin bashers in the audience ‘sick’.
And then came the turn of our heroes decked out in suits, The Young Knives. And anyone who can come up with a line like ‘if all else fails/ I am the Prince of Wales must sure ’. It has to be said that their insulting skills could do with a lesson or two with either of the Gallagher brothers (“Shut up you fat bastard!”). And their attempts to suck up to the crowd were pretty feeble (“We get the same news!”). However, they bloody well know how to charm the pants of them. And that’s even before we get to their highly exuberant songs such as recent single The Decision (featuring the above lyric!), The Rumour Mill Weekends And Bleak Days. They finished the night’s proceedings with She’s Attracted to and everyone shouting along to “You were screaming at your mum and I was punching your dad”.
