Music Reviews Artist: EditorsTitle: ' An End Has A Start 'Label: Kitchenware/Sony BMG
'An End Has A Start', the second release from Birmingham band Editors, hopes to continue on from the success of debut platinum album 'The Back Room'. Production-wise big appears to be the key word, with the emphasis on grandeur throughout. An definite ambition is prevalent in the sound of the record as pumping bass jostles with sharp angular guitar chords, and chiming lead guitar lines. While keyboards sprinkled throughout help to balance the overall sound and offer an element of variety. An echo to past stadium forbearers such as U2, the Bunnymen et al, is always present. However ’ The Editors ’ appear to have enough tricks up their sleeve’s to keep things engaging and exciting enough to attract a few of their own listeners. Lyrically much of the ground covered seems to be concerned with the idea of duality: be it the duality between life and death, or indeed pain and redemption. Death for example has been noted by Tom Smith as a central theme, as the title track puts it ’ You came on your own, that’s how you’ll leave’. Current single ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Door ’ is a compact, tightly-wrought, fast-paced affair and is common of the fourth-gear approach of the band.’ Escape the Nest ‘ meanwhile employs the consistently compelling dynamic of bass and drums leading the verses, to be up-surged by an avalanche of guitars gate-crashing the chorus. ‘ Push Your Head Towards The Air ‘ slows the pace somewhat and is indicative of the quieter moments, lead as it is by subsequently more keyboards and a military-like drum roll. At 10 tracks the album is a nice and concise length and never outstays it’s welcome, which would potentially be a problem at any greater running time due to the overall opulence. Thus in conclusion ‘Editors ‘ seem set to match the initial impact of their debut, and more than likely widen their fan base in the process.
