The secret love child of Debbie Harry and Paul Rogers, Leila Moss grabs your attention the moment she belts out a note from within the swirling mop of blonde hair. She has a voice that is as rooted in the blues as a cotton bush in the delta but the songs and the wall of sound created by guitarists Matt and Luke (not Goss) put her right in the here and now.
Koko was a great little venue for this stop in London as they tour their new album – small enough to put you up close and big enough to take the sound. Duke Spirit are a hard gigging band and as busy as hell. Leila will ensure that they get the press for her voice and her looks but the quality and richness of the songs will keep them credible, festival favorites throughout the summer.
This band is much better live than it is on your I-Pod as the jagged edges on the sound remain intact and not smoothed off by a perfection seeking producer. The gig was a good showcase of their well known tracks and new stuff but the set was crying out for a cover….maybe they could do so many justice they are having trouble agreeing on one.
