More moody Irish pop from Cathy Davey.
Released in her native Ireland in October 2007 'Tales of Silversleeve' finally gets its UK release in June. What we get is a strange mix of traditional Irish fare with bits of pop, funk and indie. The Irish Bjork perhaps?
The album opener 'Sing for Your Supper' jars somewhat with its breathy vocals and mystifying lyrics but we are soon on to to the indie-marching beats of songs like 'The Collector' and the funky bass of 'Mr Kill'. Only when Davey's eerie voice is given room to reach its full effect can her talent be appreciated.
'Tales of Silversleeve' is full of quirks, be it the plodding beat of 'Harmony' or the 50s lounge feel of 'Rubbish Ocean', and retains a melancholic tinge throughout. It is more a collection of songs that an album yet the the beauty of Davey's voice is just enough to hold them together.
