Named after the gang in the cult film ‘Wild One’, the band ‘Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’ certainly are that. Hailing from the US, L.A. based ‘BRMC’ release ‘Weapon of Choice’ their latest single taken from the bands current album ’Baby 81’. This album signals a re-birth and a desire not to back track to the unsettled times of 2004 and Jago’s temporary departure.
Like previous releases this track provides die hard fans with the usual powerful, guitar driven, drum pumping infusion of good old rock ‘n’ roll with what seems a unique twist of country/ folk twang in places.
Commendable on this track is the trios individual ability of blending together a hypnotic, jaunty, acoustic melody with their trademark ability with the electrics. Blending perfectly, Peter Hayes (guitars/vocals) and Robert Levon Been (bass/vocals/keys) show how well their song writing capabilities work when combined, signalling significant overall development over the last few albums. The track screams out obvious influences like Led Zeppelin, and example to that are gritty vocal contributions which blend well when accompanied in places by smooth vocal harmonies.
By no means the album’s most upbeat tune, ’Weapon Of Choice’ is addictive and sure to snare the publics interest. Having just finished touring with The Killers and promoting in the UK and US throughout April, May and June, there are busy times ahead for ‘BRMC‘.
