The four man band have come along way since their first release back in 2002 with the sensational ‘WESTSIDE’ single which received an overwhelming response and sincere respect within the music industry to date. ‘TOKYO’ is the second single taken from the compelling self-produced album, ‘BEYOND THE NEIGHBOURHOOD’ and after the first release ‘HURRICAINE’ the Mercury nominated band are yet to disappoint.
Athlete became the chart toppers favourite since the day they started, having already gained a platinum selling project with just their second album ‘VECHICLES AND ANIMALS’. Being independent souls the boys finished building their own studio in South East London in 2006 when just days before their ‘WIRES’ single was named Best Contemporary Song at the Ivor Novello awards. Since then the Athlete’s have continued to live up to their status of producing distinctive alternative music.
Worldwide tours, radio play-listings, award nominations and winnings inspire the bands projects as well as the likes of Massive Attack and Beck. ‘TOKYO’ is a beautiful lyrically told experience of travelling over the Rainbow Bridge in to Tokyo.
“I am Tokyo I am here I am neon signs on your street… There's never enough time, only A glare off Rainbow Bridge, Pin prick to the heart Again and again I felt every spark”
The rapid beat off the drums and guitar with a rhythmic soft but upbeat melody concludes an experience told from the heart through music.
