Music Reviews Artist: Tim Ten YenTitle: 'Girl Number One'Label: Fleet Street RecordsWebsite: http://www.timtenyen.com
Every two or three years an artist comes along that is so special, so radically different and so unique that there is a spontaneous and often universal rush to sing their praises. One such artist is Tim Ten Yen.
Having been performing for some time now, ‘TTY’ releases his debut single entitled ‘Girl Number One’. Listening to this debut there is much evidence to surmise that this track will be warmly received. Like much of ‘TTY’ music, this track is crafted with expert precision and great time and expense has been taken in order to blend varying genres which shows ‘TTY’s’ eclectic tastes.
The track starts in a sombre way blending xylophone chimes with a spell of electronic trumpets, and soon erupts in to proceedings with a high tempo spell of drumming and an equally positioned bass line. Scaling and de-scaling piano chords coupled with the smooth innocence of the vocal capabilities of ‘TTY’ truly create something special here. Never scaling beyond his own abilities there is an air of Human League lead singer Philip Oakey, vocally simple and straight forward to the ear.
‘Girl Number One’ is structurally sound in verse and chorus, however the pace of the track moves from an upbeat 80’s pop vibe to a slower reggae infused feel frequently between verse and chorus. This transition will not appeal to everyone, although the quirky transition fits well in the tracks overall genuine humour. ‘TTY’ shows us evidence of his youth and musical influences that have impressed upon him over time and this surely has created a talent that will be sure to be hard to replicate.
