Siobhan Donaghy released her debut album ’ Revolution In Me ’ in 2003. Following some minor single chart success, the album opened to apparently less than overwhelming sales. The writer’s own personal knowledge of the artist is much akin to seemingly much of the general public. That is, under definition of a erstwhile Sugarbabe gone solo. Thus it was with some surprise to be faced with the measured, ethereal, sonically ambitious sounds emanating from the stereo speakers. In the press release mention is given to the album having a similar sound to Madonna circa ’Ray of Light’, and sure that synth-layered, echoey drums feel is present in tracks such as ’ Coming Up For Air’ or ’Goldfish’. Yet such influences are mentionable as a reference point only, for make no mistake this is Siobhan’s album, clearly. Whether it be in the sublime ’ 12 Bar Acid Blues ’ or the believe it or not reggae-electro ’Sometimes’.

It appears the album has been sequenced in such a sense that the more poppy, acoustic-driven, commercial songs appear in it’s first-half, while the more ambitious, progressive tracks dominate latter proceedings. Evident in ’ Medevac ’ where the vocals are impressive enough to recall classic period Kate Bush, while the bar is further raised in the next track ’ Halcyon Days’ which bears (in a good way) more than a passing resemblance to Massive Attacks ‘Teardrop’. While this album can and indeed shall generally be classed under the broad category of pop, make no mistake this is pop in the best sense of the word. That is the kind of pop that can be noted as original, ambitious, and willing to take chances. That title of ex-Sugarbabe seems increasingly redundant.
