Being
compared to the late Jeff Buckley, the benchmark for singer songwriters, must
be something of a burden to bear. But at least it assumes that Scott Matthews’s style offers considerably more depth than
that of James Blunt et al.
Plonked
on the stool, all on his lonesome for most of the gig, there’s a sense that
what the audience is about to watch is something special indeed. He looks
comfortable with the guitar, more than with his voice at times it has to be said,
and to top it off, the man has a sense of humour! Belting out songs from his debut album
Passing Stranger, such as the forthcoming single Dream song for accompanied by
a flutist, and charming the audience with his banter, this was a show that could all
too easily have been so over indulgent.
