When the onetime Bond wannabe signed his record breaking ‘£80 Million and we’ll throw in the Caravan’ deal 3 years ago some were wary. EMI already had the back catalogue, why throw him to the mercy of a changing chart which rocky guitar acts were stamping their names on? Well, three sold out nights at Knebworth in 2003, a number one last year and now this. Whatever you may think of him (and my personal thoughts aren’t great) is a true star, because, as we’ve seen with Madonna over the years, when your environment changes, you change with it.
Although he could have returned with a set of ‘Angels’ and ‘Let Me Entertain You’ alikes, he has tried something different. ‘Tripping’s’ central players are a reggae rhythm and a stand out falsetto chorus which will make you double take a little.
The accompanying PR to this single claims that ‘Tripping’ owes a debt in inspiration and sound to the Clash - this is laughable and very convenient as everyone wants to sound like the Clash at the moment. If it is Clash inspired, then it’s a very vegetarian version minus the full fat mayo. Williams has such a huge fan base that its hard to know whether people will buy this on the strength of the song or because its him. Rating: 1/5
