Slutty plastic strippers turn girl band Pussycat Dolls team up with the Godfather of West Coast cool, Snoop Dogg, as they return with their summer release ‘Buttons’. But hang on, cats and dogs do not get on well at all – have they never seen Rhubarb and Custard! Clearly not – despite the hotter than hell, eastern influenced (think Miss Valence’s ‘Kiss Kiss’) beat that permeates the song, this band of mangy pussies and big lazy mutt don’t make for pretty listening.
Don’t get me wrong – PCD’s have consistently delighted over the last 8 months, with some great pop that always verge just on the wrong side of family orientated, but still make it onto CD:UK – ace. However, Lyrics such as, ‘I want you to loosen up my buttons’ are far too loaded with the kind of innuendo that you might hear a fat sweaty barmaid slurring to be anything more than laughably grim. And the normally excellent front pussycat Nicole sounds particularly flat, aside from a couple of Xtina influenced hollers/yelps.
Ordinarily big Snoop could never put a foot wrong (unless you are Heathrow Airport security of course). And it’s hard to blame this sham of a song on the D-O-double G considering that he features on all of 11 seconds of the track, 5 of which are just a list of the PCD’s names. Not good. Clearly more a quick money spinner rather than a magnum opus for Snoop. All in all, a shameful release, saved only by some great production, and fantastic beats – thanks Christ they didn’t get Danger Mouse to do it!
