Music Reviews Artist: MIKATitle: Love TodayLabel: CassablancaWebsite: http://www.mikasounds.com
A second single taken from Mika’s debut album ‘Life In Cartoon Motion’, this latest offering entitled ‘Love Today’ is as hyperactive and uplifting as the first.
Described as a cross between Beck, Queen and Elton John, Mika has all the qualities of an artist that will endure the test of time and appeal to the masses. But there is something more to this unique talent and different from your customary mass marketed artist. Injected into proceedings is an unequivocal essence of opulent greats The Bee Gees, and more contemporary group The Scissor Sisters. On reflection there is real substance and craft to what is being manufactured.
Latest offering ‘Love Today’ like previous single release ’Grace Kelly’ is packed with all the usual musical make up. A piano-laden melodic bass line is set down and drums give chase to produce an addictive, foot stomping, rumpus.
Using a surprising range of vocal techniques and ranges throughout the three and half minutes or so, Mika goes from the levels of tenor to on occasion what seems to be a dramatic soprano but having been witness to previous releases you wouldn’t really expect anything less.
Keeping his lyrics simple, Mika is able to get across to the listener his inner most thoughts and feelings, namely those of love and life with this track. An understated songwriter, performer, producer and orchestrator having struggled all his life to succeed it is now that Mika is receiving the attention and praise he so rightly deserves.
This single is packed with great hooks, soaring and catchy choruses , fun and sometimes insightful lyrics. What's most amazing, though, is how easily he blends styles and emerges with a sound that is all his own. Definitely worth adding to your collection.
