Mika, the winner of the BBC’s Sound Of 2007 poll is the type of artist that will probably be loved as much as he is loathed. With his falsetto vocals and theatricality he has compared to Scissor Sisters and Freddie Mercury. His latest single Grace Kelly has already taken over the airwaves and you can expect more excitement when his debut album, Life In Cartoon Motion is released.
It’s inevitable that Mika’s music won’t be to everyone’s taste. Indeed, the man himself has said that he had difficultly getting any attention at the beginning as he was neither indie nor pop enough. In fact Mika is probably the perfect mixture of both, the f*ck what you think, DIY of indie and the exuberance and eager to please of pop. So he’s going to damn well make the campest tunes around if he feels like it and sod you if you don’t get it. Witness the sardonic lines “should I bend over/should I look over just to be put on your shelf” on Grace Kelly. Lollipop meanwhile may just be the filthiest song ever (“sucking too hard on your lollipop/love’s gonna get you down”) but so incredibly bouncy and catchy. Love Today is so euphoric that it’ll definitely be a hit or miss.
