For someone who’s not had much in the way of publicity or press this side of the Atlantic, it’s nice that Matt Costa’s first solo UK gig is in front of a sold out and highly enthusiastic audience, most of whom may have seen him support fellow singer-songwriter and occasional surfer Jack Johnson.
There are a few problems that the ex-skateboarder and his band had to overcome. First is the slightly lagging audience who had been waiting patiently since there was no support act. Second is the lack of air conditioning, a serous issue for those who don’t like their venues hot ‘n’ stuffy.
Oh Dear was the opening number, slightly Beatleseque and quirky. Like Jack Johnson, Matt is also knows a thing or two about producing some feel good tunes. Cold December, The Ballad Of Miss Kate all inspired a grand sing a long and added to a great atmosphere. Miss Magnolia saw Matt and co. be joined by some random members of the public.
If the truth be told, Matt Costa won’t appeal to everyone as he isn’t edgy enough and just too damn 'nice'. However, from the looks of things, he’ll have more than enough of his share of fans.
