Jewel is up there with Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette in the pantheon of songwriters. A pantheon of paragons. “Goodbye Alice In Wonderland” is autobiographical but immensely successful. It can be heard simply as a record full of songs (some with a kicking beat, others with a slower, more mellow tempo). It can be heard as a critique on modern life in the manner of Pink’s recent satire on the world: “Stupid Girls”. Or it can be heard as the story of Jewel’s life so far and her hopes and dreams for the future. Jewel’s voice is beautiful and powerful and, once the album has finished playing, you instinctively press the play button once again to hear the music all over again.
Jewel likens this new album to a novel. It has a beginning, middle and, unfortunately, an end. But for me- as the listener- this album is a statement. It says: “Jewel’s still here, making great music”. People have betrayed Jewel over the years and bad things have happened in her life. But she absorbs all that she feels and puts it into her music as an expression of the passion in her talent. Truly, he/she who listens to this album is in the presence of a living legend.
