Cornwall native James Morrison released ‘The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore’ as his third single and as an end to what has been an impressive year for him. Three sell out UK tours, a half a million selling number one album and two top ten singles were the highlights of 2006 and with a new tour set to kick off next month, 2007 should be as good for Mr Morrison.
Apart from Paolo Nutini and the odd Coldplay track, there must have been memo on all the white, middle class singers with a penchant for some “chill-out soul” that we missed. Most of these over hyped and surprisingly successful singers leave a slightly underwhelming feeling along with doziness.
But half way through his latest track it was quickly noted that painting Morrison with the same brush is not only unfair but inaccurate. ‘The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore’ is interesting without being busy and Morrison’s naturally soulful voice adds some passion and feeling into his lyrics. Simple soul at it’s best.
