Another day, another songstress. Duffy joins the likes of Adele and Laura Marling on the list of ladies set to brighten up our summer. Hailed as the new Dusty Springfield, her debut single “Rockferry” was a majestic mixture of 60’s soul and blues that had us literally picking her up, putting her on our shoulders and plonking her right into the hype machine. Now three months on the album’s out and it’s either going to be hailed as a fine achievement in resurrecting a lost sound or it’s going to be recognized as contrived and manufactured. For this journalist it’s somewhere in between. In one sense there are moments of satisfying ambience in the form of “Stepping Stone” and “Hanging On Too Long.” Also a pleasant sense of nostalgia with number 1 single “Mercy,” however none seem to capture the magic of the title track and as for the rest of the songs they kind of have that dreary, predictable Corinne Bailey Rae feel about them. In any case it’s a decent, honest achievement for someone who came second in the Welsh version of Pop Idol.
