My, hasn’t our Charl grown up? Nights out on the tiles, bad boy boyfriends, she’s no longer the voice of an angel and she wants the world to know it. Working with the likes of ex-Take That Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams’ old writing partner Guy Chambers, Tissues and Issues Charlotte Church’s first departure from her classical roots.
If there was any track that was to welcome in the new Charlotte Church to the world it’s the opener Call My Name a saucy number with lyrics such as ‘I like the sound of your shirt ripping’ and ‘your whip cracking, this could be painful.’ Proclamations of naughtiness aside, the track is a sassy bit of pop so is Crazy Chick which follows. There’s a whole range of styles here. Let’s Be Alone is dance, Euro pop, Casualty of Love has a Latino flavour, Show a Little Faith is soulful with a bit of gospel. Most notable however is the bluesy Fool No More which is reminiscent of Sam Brown’s Stop, a song that was recently covered by Jamelia. A great song, and while we all know she can sing, it’s on tracks like this where she shows that her voice is more suited to Broadway musicals than pop.
Grown up Charlotte maybe, but Tissues and Issues is so ballad heavy that the rest of the tracks really aren’t worth talking about. Maybe it’ll take a few more listens, but so far they’re unforgettable and it makes you wonder where that Crazy Chick is.
