@ Wembley - 28th March 2004
BUSTED... now that's exactly how I felt when I bumped into a mate from work at the gig last night at Wembley Arena. The things I do for UKmusic.com!
I entered the auditorium stylishly late with a bottle of Carlsberg in one hand and my ticket in the other. As I found my seat I realised that I was just a couple of rows from the front of the stage - not bad I thought to myself.
Up and coming young pop-rock act Mc Fly were support band and what a response they got! Tom, Dougie, Harry and Danny jumped around on stage with guitars, bashed those drums like madmen and had bags of enthusiasm for such little people! And the crowd loved them...
...But not as much as they loved ! During the interlude between Mc Fly finishing their performance and beginning theirs, huge TV screens showed music stars such as Beyonce Knowles and Justin Timberlake, but they received just a murmur of response from the audience - BUT as soon as images of Matt, James and Charlie appeared (aka ), they went mental. I've never heard a bunch of kids scream so loud in all my life. But this was nothing compared to reaction that they got when they finally appeared on stage.
began their performance with computerised scenes from out of space, before bursting onto stage. Performing several tracks off their album including chart smasher ‘Year 3000', I was surrounded by an adoring crowd who were jumping and dancing on their seats, screaming like mad people and holding up signs that read ‘ Rock Our Thongs!' Fairly full on for a crowd made up kids I thought!
There was one lad in the audience who was really going for it, pretending to play the electric guitar, head banging - the works. Wembley arena was packed solid. Everyone was loving it, even parents who pretended that they were only there to accompany their children! They made so much noise that when I left my ears were ringing...
Not my favourite band in the world, but the boys did themselves proud and admittedly, I did end up quite enjoying the night (although I did have about 5 Carlsberg's!)
