When two already brilliant musical genres come together it can be as exciting as it is refreshing and in the late nineties the emergence of reggaeton not only brought music together but cultures too. In case you’re not familiar with the term, "reggaeton" is a form of dance music that merged Jamaican dancehall and reggae with Latin bomba and plena as well as hip-hop.
I was recently lucky enough to visit Cuba and being one of the countries that pioneered the new sound I was exposed to some amazing beats and unforgettable dance moves. However, this CD is not a reflection of the raw musical movement that is reggaeton. The sound is weak and relies too heavily on ragga classics such as "Murder She Wrote" by Chaka Demus & Pliers not to mention the unbelievable slaughter of T-Rex’s "Children of the Revolution"; I’d be surprised to find out that the lovely Marc Bolan hasn’t done somersaults in his grave.
So much potential and so little to show for it, if you wanna hear real Cuban reggaeton, go to Cuba.
