“Hi, do you trust Nigerians? The kinda people who are rugged and resilient, shady like Sicilians?” asks Terry tha Rapman in opener I am a Nigerian – a ditty in the style and tune of Eminem’s My Name Is. The opening track sets the tone of things to come, with a number of the tracks taking on a distinctly political tone across a diverse set of artists, sounds and styles. Genre-wise, it covers hip-hop, reggae, dancehall and Afrobeat and language-wise, it’s a dizzying mix of English, Pidgin English and Yoruba. The stand-out track is Weird MC’s Ijoya, a blend of urban London-style lyrics and African melodies that would sound as fantastic pumping out of a London dancehall or hip hop club as it would all those miles away in bustling Lagos. In sum, this is a compilation that does a lot for Nigeria as a country, presenting it as a vibrant and culture-filled country despite its notorious widespread corruption and fraud, and does even more for Nigerian music – confirming its status as a contemporary creative force to be reckoned with following the success enjoyed by afrobeat luminary Fela Kuti and his son Femi.
