Now I'll admit The Cinematic Orchestra are a band I don't know much about, all I really do know is that I should know more. Mojo described them as "Soul power at its most deepest and profound . . .capable of real wonder," while the Guardian opted for "An immensely moving, utterly distinct nightmare world which is a pleasure to inhabit."
The name itself is rather a strange one but it takes only a few seconds of their music to realise that The Cinematic Orchestra is an entirely appropriate moniker. Their music is deeply atmospheric, sometimes haunting and always moving. It has the eerie presence of the Bajo Fundo Tango Club but draws on a wider musical vocabulary.
"Ma Fleur: Live At The Barbican" is a 4 track download only Ep featuring recordings from their sell out Barbican show in May. The group is renowned for its hectic touring schedule and this performance is regarded as one of their best.
They draw on a staggering array of instruments including guitar, piano, double bass, drums, strings, saxophone and synths. Its beauty comes together in a bitter sweet way and leaves you with a spine tingling chill. If you weren't at the Barbican on May 6th this album will leave you wishing that you were.
