On a chilly Sunday night in November The Theatre Royal was warmed by Paul Buchanon and his band, delivering fine quality music to a highly discerning gathering of Blue Nile cognoscente. Despite long gaps between tours and album releases, his relationship with his fans is familiar and easy going. The audience showed their appreciation enthusiastically as he came on stage, and respect as he led his band, including former Blue Nile bandmate Robert Bell, through favourites like Heatwave, Rooftops and Tinseltown. Throughout the evening he quipped with the audience, responded to amiable shouts and generally reinforced his rapport with his people. The mood was romantic and calming, and his songs seem to say ‘it’s alright – all the ups and downs of life and love that might trouble you – don’t worry we’re all in the same boat and we’re all still here.
Now I have to admit I am not one of the cognoscente but I reckon this is the music of connoisseurs; people who possibly have a ‘What Hi Fi’ highly recommended separates system and make an occasion of listening to Buchanon with a rather fine (but good value) glass of Cote du Rhone from Waitrose. They might enjoy introducing his music to friends when they retire to the sitting room after a dinner party they spent a good part of the day preparing. To go and see him live is a also a night out among friends; fans who have followed the man through the years and probably revel in the fact that he is a rather refined choice for a Sunday night’s entertainment.
