Ninja Cuts is not only the coolest named record label but one that puts out some pretty good tunes too. ‘You Don’t Know: Ninja Cuts’ is an attempt to demonstrate that no matter what you think you know about Ninja, you don’t know it all.
Taken from across the three labels (Ninja Tune, Big Dada and Counter) the three cd compilation seeks to document where Ninja‘s at, where it all began and where its going. Alongside tracks like Mike Ladd’s ‘Blah Blah’, from back in ’98, it boasts cuts from albums that aren’t even out yet (Pop Levi‘s ‘Dita Dimone‘ being just one example), and alternative releases from acts like Mr Scruff and Cinematic Orchestra.
It offers everything from the pimped out, filthy electro of Spank Rock to the electronica meets jazz of Loka, and with a healthy dose of hip hop, dub-step and d n’ b along the way. Representing the UK are the likes of Roots Manuva, DJ Shadow and Bonobo, while doing their bit for the other side of the Atlantic are Diplo and Kid Koala. And, as you’d expect label founder Coldcut crops up a fair few times.
Whatever you know about Ninja Tune you’re unlikely to find a compilation featuring artists with such an innovative approach to music that also provide such consistently good results.
