Having just been signed to Mercury Records and received encouraging endorsements from Sway and 1Xtra DJ Semtex, 2007 should be a good year for Mr Hudson and his band. This EP is the first taste of Mr Hudson before the debut album comes out later this year and although it shows promise, a slightly harder hitting and memorable CD would have done the trick.
The influence from different genres is obvious; “Bread + Roses” has a mellow hip hop beat with traditional jazz vocals although it does sound a bit unusual – like putting Chris Martin and Jay Z in a blender - it fails to leave a lasting impression. However the third track “Everything Happens To Me”, does have simple and quirky lyrics to fall back on – “I’ve emailed and I’ve phoned, sent a text message or two, you told me to piss off, and for that respect is due.” Maybe the album will be better but this CD is just alright.
