While enjoys legendary status in his native Brazil he remains relatively unknown in the UK. If his Marquee Club show is anything to go by however this seems set to change, and he is on is way to building up a dedicated following over here. D2 first came to fame as the front man of Rio’s weed toking rock/rap collective ‘Planet Hemp’ and while he assures us we have not seen the last of them his solo career has taken off with amazing success. D2 is renowned as the father of the uniquely Brazilian sound samba hip hop and his latest album ‘Looking for the Perfect Beat’ has won a string of awards.
When asked in a recent interview about any regrets he may have about smoking so much weed D2 accepted it hasn’t done wonders for his memory and cheekily admitted, “ A lot of time I forget the lyrics to a song,”. Whether this was his reason for continually jumping from song to song or not it worked perfectly. D2’s live sound is a far cry from the smooth and perfectly produced flow of ‘Looking for the Perfect Beat’ (it was produced by once Beastie Boys producer Marlo Caldato). The rawness of his sound and the edginess of his voice gives the distinct impression that you witnessing something special. His sound is hard to describe as he borrows generously from just about every other genre. Samba and hip hop are the obvious staples but the influences of rock, reggae, funk, funk carioca and soul are all clear.
Stepping into The Marquee Club felt like discovering a little piece of Brazil tucked away in a corner of Leicester Square; the atmosphere was incredible – smiles everywhere and with the heat created by so many bodies packed into one room I could almost imagine I was there on a beach in Rio. D2 seemed as happy to be on stage as we were to be watching him, staying up there for nearly three hours. He covered just about everything everyone could have wanted and even managed to squeeze in a couple of repeats and few Planet Hemp classics. Highlights of the night included ‘Procura Da Batida Perfeita /Looking for the Perfect Beat’, ‘Contexto’ and ‘Loadeando’. ‘Loadeando’ is usually performed by D2 and his twelve year old son but on this occasion the fans obediently took his son’s place and proudly sung his lines.
Considering my usual cynical demeanour I’m struggling to find anything to criticise here. I feel I must at least point out the sad lack of other gringos in the crowd; there were a few of us but this was a predominantly Brazilian affair. I know we in the UK seem to have some aversion to music in any language other English (and it is true we have such a wealth of music in English why bother?) but come on guys you missing out.
The show was organised in celebration of JungleDrums magazine’s third birthday and let’s hope they continue their sterling work of promoting all things Brazilian over here. Check out www.jungledrums.org for more info.
