The musical minds behind this album could not be more different; vocalist Castro is in her twenties, hails from Stuttgart, is the daughter of Spanish immigrants, a former rock chick and admirer of Bjork, Elbow and Kyuss, while guitarist Don Phillipe is a hip-hop maestro, son of a Parisian mother and more than half a generation older. An odd couple indeed yet one that produces a unique dynamic and a strangely alluring sound.
‘Mi Libro Abierto’ is mellow and chilled and, with no derogation intended, the perfect coffee shop album. Castro’s voice is sensual and brooding, perfectly complemented by the finely tuned string arrangements (courtesy of Sebastian Studnitzky) and the gentle melodies of the Spanish guitar. It glides seamlessly between the Bosa-nova influenced ‘Estate’ to the tango tinged ‘Mi Amor Lleva Una Espina’ and the Beatlesque ‘Ahora Te Veo Mas Cerca’
It is an album that is easy to appreciate yet one that is unlikely to excite.
