Jose Gonzalez is like most good food, an acquired taste; those who have tampered with the Veneer album will have experienced this. Gonzalez acoustic finger flicking is hypnotizing and ‘Crosses’ bares a sharp example of this, at times following both the lyrics and the guitar excellence is quite a task. Gonzalez has his own niche carved out in this music market and deservedly so. Hot on the heels of Heartbeats (originally recorded by current Swedish favourites The Knife, ‘Crosses’ demonstrates just why the album Veneer has stayed in the Top Ten for a month. ‘Crosses’ is folky and reflective but at the same time tinged with a fast plucking Latin folk aura that really does musically challenge. The listener will require three playbacks in one sitting to truly appreciate the workmanship here. Track two on the single ‘Storm’ is equally as compelling, just slower and more somber. Different but refreshingly so.
