If you’ve ever wondered how an animated pop group would manage to perform a live concert then this live DVD of the extremely rare Gorillaz gig last year at the Manchester Opera House should answer those questions.
What we have then is not the usual puppet/ holograms of the animated ‘band’. Instead it’s Damon Albarn and co. silhouetted in front of a screen, so in fact you don’t really see much of a band anyway - which is fine because it’s all about the music innit? There are also appearances from Demon Days collaborators such as Shaun Ryder, Nenah Cherry, De La Soul, Roots Manuva etc. A moment of genius is at the end when it’s revealed that 2D and Murdoc of Gorillaz were amongst the audience (royal box naturally). It’s a big show that had obviously had to be well thought out to the point where the people behind the scenes must be completely bald by now. It’s definitely a show that has never before been attempted, and you can see it in all its glory on this fine DVD. Shame about the lack of extras though.
