Evita, the Andrew Lloyd Webber/ Tim Rice musical, first
opened in 1978. Nearly thirty years and a Hollywood
movie later it's still going strong. This album is a recording from the cast of
the current West End production with the
award-winning Elena Roger in the title role.
For the uninitiated, Evita recalls the story of Eva Peron,
nicknamed Evita, who was the second wife of Argentine dictator Juan Peron and
died who in 1952. Familiar songs like
Another Suitcase and of course Don't Cry For Me Argentina are included as well
as You Must Love Me which was originally written for the 1996 Alan Parker film adaptation which
starred Madonna in probably her most acclaimed acting part yet.
If musicals are your thing then this should be a nice
theatrical trip down memory lane. Roger in her Argentine accent adds
authenticity to the character, and hits notes that Madge would shell out wads
loads of cash to be able to reach. The live orchestral sound captures that
energy that must be apparent on the stage, especially on up temp tracks like
the tango inspired Bueno Aires. Doesn't make up for watching the actual live
performance, but it's a nice addition to the collection.
