Both Sides Of The Gun is Ben Harper's seventh album and is eighteen songs across two CDs. The pupose (when they could have all fitted onto one CD) is I think to organise and separate the style of songs. Hmmm.... Nicely packaged if nothing else.
I listen and begin to realise that the two discs display both sides of Ben Harper: Disc one is the sensitive singer-songwriter and disc two the political fireball. The first disc is quieter with lightly fingerpicked guitar music and gentle vocals. My favourite is Sweet Nothing Serende, soft and bluesy.
Harper's music is beautiful and easy to listen to, but not very energised, until that is you get to disc number two...
Disc two is a lot funkier and passionate, with heavier beats and upbeat tempos. The album closes with Serve Your Soul - an eight minute guitar driven epic. It is a song about maintaining your individuality in spite of societal pressures. It rocks hard.
Lyrically his songs stretch from matters political to introspective emotions and musically Both Sides Of The Gun is a blend of alternative rock, reggae, gospel, folk, blues, soul and funk. Harper's quest to break down musical barriers is his strength.
An enjoyable, if not a bit serious album.
