Air seem to have been rolling out their own individual style of electronica for years, blending the 1970’s synthesizer sounds of Jean Michel Jarre with the psychedelic rock of Pink Floyd. ‘Mer Du Japon’ translates into English as Sea of Japan and this track certainly gives an underlying feel of the orient with a synthesized mandolin/ piano melody that runs throughout.
As to compliment the track, a mix of both French and Japanese vocals add to the mystical soothing qualities of the already highly ambient atmosphere created by this union. Some may class this track as elevator music, pointing out that this track lacks something in comparison to other Air tracks. But when a band who are already classed as gods in their particular genre reach a certain point experimentation takes over and ‘Mer Du Japon‘ signals that point.
