Abdominal is back with another dose of old school style, fun filled hip hop.
‘Abdominal Workout’ is the follow up to A’s debut ’Pedal Pusher’ and serves up yet more DJ Format produced party funk combined with his smooth cheeky raps. Its another concept track and quite the lyrical workout; Abdominal spits flawlessly at speed, always keeping the rhythm, and apparently without any effort.
The Canadian born Jewish rapper began impressing students, trendsetters and journalists alike back in 2001 when he shot to fame as the unknown Mc on some of Format’s early releases. Those in the know have been clamouring for a solo album ever since and were finally given what they wanted when ‘Escape from the Pigeon Hole’ was released in June. His brand of cheery rap has its detractors however arguing its too smooth, and a little too happy (my view is get over it). If you like a bit of J5, Ugly Duckling or Del Tha Funky Homosapien then Abdominal is probably for you.
Sadly though ‘Abdominal Workout’ isn’t Abdominal at his best; the rusty guitar licks add a bit of oomph as do the funky drum riffs but it lacks that something special. it’s the kind of track that works a well on the album but feels a bit exposed on its own. A himself asserts, “Its so flippin’ hot that its off the thermometer, it’s the phenomenon that people be hoppin’ on . . .” but I’m afraid I just can’t agree.
‘Abdominal Workout’ is out on Antidote on October 1st.
