Music Reviews Artist: Wax TailorTitle: Hope & Sorrow
'Sweeping, cinematic hip-hop' is how Wax Tailor's people are billing him and its hard to think of a better way to sum him up. Tailor, aka Jc Le Saout – yes he's French, first turned heads with his 'Tales of the Forgotten Melodies' in '06 and now he's back with another dose of sample heavy, slightly spacey hip hop.
'Hope and Sorrow' boasts an impressive array of musical guests from neo-soul stalwart Sharon Jones, on the moody R&B number 'The Way We lived', to the underground collective The Others on the raucous 'House of Wax'. Marina Quaisse and A.S.M pop up on 'Positively Inclined' while Voice adds smooth vocals to the old-school bounce 'The Games You Play'.
Tailor's turntable skills are used to good effect throughout, with my favourite coming on the cut n' paste job 'No Tune' where vintage samples collide with stumbling beats and jazzy fx. Its hard to put your finger on just how but Tailor manages to inject a mischievous tone into his music.
There really is no excuse not to buy this album.
